...I'm at the Academy of Visual Arts in Kampen, Holland. Over
here, although you gain degrees at an Academy, it is not at as
high a level as an University. You can only go to a University
if you are studying something like Law, or Medicine. It’s
a bit like our Oxford and Cambridge.
Kampen Academy is situated on the river Ijssel, a large river
that runs into the Rhine, and has many large boats moving to and
from Germany, carrying all sorts of materials. The Academy is
about the same size as the art scool at Margaret Street and is
about as old.
Since I've been here I have been inspired by these boats: their
size, the types of cargo and for the crew members it is also their
home (they're usually carrying a car on board). Also moored here
are large old sailing boats called Koggewere, their masts are
about 17ft high with so many ropes. It fascinates me how they
are all needed to help the ship to sail. So, at the moment I am
doing some research, sketches, and photography...
